Feeling inspired at Our People Awards 2024
Published 15 October 2024
October saw the return of one of the most heart-warming events on the Making Space calendar, the Our People Awards 2024, an inspiring day dedicated to celebrating the incredible achievements of the people we support, our volunteers, and our colleagues. Held at Aintree Racecourse, this year's event brought together over 300 attendees to enjoy a day filled with uplifting stories, engaging activities, music, and most importantly, laughter.
With a focus on diversity, overcoming barriers, and being the best we can, the event was hosted by Jake Mills, stand-up comedian, mental health campaigner and the founder of national mental health charity, Chasing the Stigma. It featured motivational speaker Gary Skyner, whose own journey of overcoming challenges as one of the first children born affected by Thalidomide captivated the audience. Musical entertainment was provided by the energetic ABBA tribute act, The Dynamos, and the day ended on a high note with an inclusive, interactive dance session from DanceSyndrome, which empowers people with and without learning disabilities through inclusive, disability-led dance, creating joy and opportunities for all.
Reflecting on the event, Making Space CEO Rachel Peacock said:
“The Our People Awards is always one of the highlights of the year for me. It's not just a day filled with laughter and celebration, it's an opportunity to connect with the amazing people we support and welcome new faces.
“What fills me with pride is seeing our entire Making Space family - colleagues, volunteers, and the people we support - come together with such dedication to create this incredible event. I’m also deeply inspired by the award winners and nominees, whose stories of perseverance and compassion truly reflect the heart and spirit of our organisation."
In addition to arts and crafts, a fun photo booth, and a Caricaturist, this year’s event also raised £451 through a raffle and the sale of hand-crafted gifts from Warrington Connect Hub, thanks to the generosity of attendees.
