Unplug for better mental health: Join our Digital Detox month this March!

Published 11 February 2025

March 2025 is Digital Detox Month at Making Space, and we’re inviting you to take on a challenge that benefits both your mental wellbeing and the people we support.

Many of us rely on our phones, tablets, and digital devices, often choosing online interactions over face-to-face connections. But excessive screen time can contribute to stress, anxiety, and sleep problems, making it harder to stay focused and truly connect with those around us. By stepping away from your devices - even for a short while - you can reconnect with real-life moments and also raise vital funds for Making Space.

Go solo or team up with family, friends, or colleagues. Whether you support Making Space as a whole or your local service, every moment offline makes a difference. Ready to take on the challenge?

Why should I Digitally Detox?

Taking a break from screens can help you reconnect with others, reduce stress, and stay present in the moment.

It can also improve sleep, boost mood, reduce anxiety, enhance focus, and ease eye strain.

Stepping away from devices gives you more time to try new activities, enjoy the outdoors, and have real face-to-face conversations with family and friends.

How to Digitally Detox?

Your detox, your rules! All we ask is that you choose a period of time in March 2025 to step away from screens in a way that works for you.

  • Pick your timeframe – a day, a week, or maybe every Sunday in March.
  • Decide what to detox from – social media, certain apps, or specific devices.
  • Go all in or ease into it – take a complete break from screens or limit your usage.

However you choose to detox, remember that phones can be essential for safety and staying connected with loved ones. Make sure your detox is manageable and doesn’t cut you off from support.

How to take part in the challenge

  1. Choose your detox – Decide when and how long you’ll unplug.
  2. Pick your challenge – Select which devices or apps you’ll take a break from.
  3. Join the Making Space Digital Detox Team Fundraiser – Sign up here and click ‘Sign Up’ and create a fundraising page for yourself or your team.
  4. Nominate a friend!
Who do YOU think needs a digital detox? Your best mate, partner, or maybe even your teenager?

Nominate them to take part in the Making Space Digital Detox this March! If they accept and succeed, you could donate £10 to Making Space. If they fail...they donate!

It’s a win-win – you’ll support their wellbeing and raise funds for a brilliant cause. Nominate 3-5 people today and spread the challenge far and wide!

Make sure to create a separate page so your donations and sponsorships are tracked properly. If you're unsure, our fundraising team can help set it up!

What can you do during your Digital Detox?

We all have the habit of reaching for our phones throughout the day - but now’s your chance to make the most of your screen-free time! Here are some great ways to stay engaged:

  • Get outside – take a walk in the park, along the beach, or simply explore your local area.
  • Reconnect in person – meet up with family and friends face-to-face instead of messaging.
  • Get social at work – organise a board game lunch with colleagues (Jenga or Cluedo, anyone?).
  • Read a book – escape into a good story or learn something new.
  • Try mindfulness colouring – relax and unwind with some creative time.

Your detox is a chance to be more present, try new things, and enjoy real-life moments. What will you do with your time?

MMA Fighter and Making Space supporter, Verce King talks about his experience with taking a step away from his screens:

"When I take a digital detox, I focus on getting back to basics, whether it's hitting the gym for that feel-good boost, walking in nature to truly absorb my surroundings, or picking up a book instead of a screen. I’ve also set myself a goal to finish two books by summer!

“Technology has its positives, especially for long-distance communication, learning, and tracking fitness, but stepping away from screens helps me reconnect with the world around me and appreciate what’s right in front of me."

Next steps

Digital devices are a big part of modern life, and while we can’t avoid them entirely, we can learn to use them in a healthier way.

At the end of Digital Detox Month, we’ll be sharing tips on how to maintain a balanced approach to technology, use devices for good, and discover helpful apps to support your wellbeing. Keep an eye on Making Space social media, and if you’ve taken part, you’ll receive these resources directly.

Need help or want to let us know you’re taking part? Contact the Making Space Fundraising Team at fundraising@makingspace.co.uk who will be happy to support you with setting up your page!
