From volunteer to leader – celebrating Bradley as a finalist in the Learning Disability and Autism Leaders Awards 2025

Published 21 March 2025

National social care charity Making Space is incredibly proud that Bradley, a person we support, has been named a finalist in the 2025 Learning Disability and Autism Leaders Awards.

The awards by Dimensions, honour the invaluable contributions of people with learning disabilities and autistic people, whose exceptional work is often overlooked. Bradley’s recognition highlights his unwavering commitment to advocacy, inclusion, and empowerment, making a tangible difference in the lives of many.

At just 31 years old, Bradley is a passionate advocate for inclusion and has dedicated nearly half his life to championing the rights and voices of people with learning disabilities. Since the age of 18, he has been a force for positive change, ensuring that individuals like himself are heard in health and social care.

Bradley founded Spring Into Phab, a multi-activity social group in Lancashire, run entirely by volunteers, including individuals with learning disabilities. As Club Leader and Chairperson, he organises monthly outings that promote independence, confidence, and social connection. Even during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Bradley adapted and continued his mission, moving activities online and keeping the community engaged.

His contributions go beyond community groups. Since moving into his Making Space supported living flat in 2020, Bradley has played a key role in co-production within the organisation. From co-chairing meetings in the Making Change Group to shaping Making Space’s website for better accessibility, his insights and lived experience have been invaluable in improving services for others.

Bradley also volunteers with several organisations, including North West Training & Development Team & Pathways CIC, where he trains professionals on how to support people with learning disabilities. Additionally, he works on projects that improve accessibility in outdoor activities and contributes to university training programs for future health and social care professionals.

Bradley is thrilled to be recognised for his work, saying:

I’m really happy to be a finalist. It’s good to show that people with learning disabilities can do great things and make a difference. We have important things to say, and people should listen to us.

I volunteer because I love meeting people like me and making services better for everyone. It's important to share our experiences so professionals understand how to support people with learning disabilities. I get a lot of joy from helping others, it's hard work, but it's worth it!

Being nominated and getting to the finals helps raise awareness about Spring Into Phab and how important it is for people like me to have fun, be independent, and be part of a community. It’s great to be recognised, and I hope this shows people how much we can do and why our voices matter.

Rachel Peacock, Making Space’s CEO, shared her excitement about Bradley’s recognition:

We are absolutely thrilled that Bradley has been recognised as a finalist for the award. His passion, commitment, and leadership have transformed so many lives, both within Making Space and beyond.

Bradley embodies the spirit of co-production, ensuring that people with lived experience have a voice in shaping the support they receive. His work is inspiring, and we are so proud to support him on this journey.

Beyond his advocacy, Bradley is the life and soul of the party, known for his big personality and infectious energy. His enthusiasm is contagious, inspiring both his peers and professionals to listen, learn, and make meaningful changes. His ability to connect with people, guide discussions, and ensure no one is left behind makes him not just a leader, but a role model in advocacy and inclusion. His adaptability and relentless pursuit of equality make him a truly deserving candidate for this award.

Bradley’s enthusiasm, leadership, and commitment to inclusion make him an invaluable part of Making Space. His impact is felt not only through his direct contributions but also in the way he empowers others, ensuring that the voices of people with lived experience are heard and acted upon.

Bradley’s achievements reflect the core values of Making Space, where co-production is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that having a voice, feeling valued, and being recognised for who you are is essential in social care. Co-production is not just about involving or consulting people, it’s about working together as equals. Everyone has skills, knowledge, and experiences to share, and Bradley is a shining example of what can be achieved when lived experience leads the way.

We encourage more people to get involved with Making Space, whether through volunteering, joining a co-production group, or supporting advocacy initiatives. Click here to learn more about how you can make a difference.
