Bradford Support Workers win charity award for work with carers
Two Support workers from our Bradford & Airedale Carer Support service have received an award for developing education sessions and resources aimed at helping carers take care of themselves as well as their loved ones.
Gillian Angus and Theresa Rawson were jointly awarded the Co-Production Award at our Making Space Colleague Awards, for their work on the Resilience for Carers initiative.
They were presented with a certificate and trophy by Andy Grant - motivational speaker, Iraq and Afghanistan veteran and the world’s fastest single leg amputee in the world over 10KM – at an award ceremony at Manchester’s Mercure Hotel.
“It’s a great honour to be involved in creating training materials for all the services, and to be able to work with everyone involved,” said Theresa.
“I’m glad to know that what we’ve created has been such a help to those who need it.”
Gillian added: “I am proud of all the hard work and support from all involved in creating excellent training facilities for all our services."
Gillian and Theresa were nominated for the award by their team leader Linda Anderson, who said: “Covid has been very hard on carers, especially mental health carers who had to cope on their own due to lack of services for their loved ones.
“Gill and Theresa realised carers needed some training on how to look after themselves, both mentally and physically. On top of their very busy caseloads, they co-produced training resources on Resilience for Carers, with a training pack and seven sessions delivered to carers in our carer support groups in Keighley and Calderdale.
“The feedback from carers so far has been excellent. Both Gill and Theresa have worked very hard on this, putting in a lot of time and effort, doing things in their own time and attending meetings on their days off.”
Over 250 people were nominated for the Making Space awards, with three individuals or teams shortlisted for each award. The judges – trustee Ted McGuinness and chief people officer Phil Orton - praised the pair for the excellent support they provide carers.
“Gill and Theresa Rawson are excellent carer support workers and always go above and beyond their job description,” said Phil. “Their enthusiasm and dedication in creating these resources mean that carers will get some much-needed extra support.”
The inaugural Making Space Colleague Awards have been established to recognise and pay tribute to individuals and teams who inspire others, go above and beyond expectations and make a real difference to the lives of the people we support.
