About Psychological Wellbeing Service

Our Psychological Wellbeing Service offers support for those who are struggling with mild to moderate common mental health conditions. Our support is free, is tailored to you and your needs, and is available to those living in Wigan.

It’s normal for everyone to experience changes in mood. But, if the way you are feeling is affecting your life in a negative way, it could be that your mental health is under strain and that you need some support to feel better.

Our caring and professional Psychological Wellbeing Service team are here to help and guide you through the problems you are experiencing and to help you develop the tools, confidence and resilience needed to overcome these problems.

We can support people who are experiencing a range of mental health problems, including: mild to moderate depression, generalised anxiety disorder, stress, low mood, poor sleep, problem solving, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), controlling anger, building self-esteem, panic, phobias and mindfulness.

What we offer

The first step is getting to know you. Using a CBT approach, our Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs) will start with an initial person-centred assessment. During the assessment we will:

  • Discuss how you are feeling, the problem(s) you are experiencing and how it is impacting your life
  • Help you to identify the link between your thoughts, feelings and behaviour
  • Discuss treatment options with you and, together, we will choose the support that is right for you and your needs

This assessment will take just 45 minutes and can be completed face-to-face, over the phone or via video call. At the end of this assessment, together we will decide the right support for you.

We provide 2 evidence-based talking therapies that are both IAPT compliant and recommended by National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

  • Computerised cognitive behavioural therapies (cCBT)
  • Guided 1:1 self-help

We also offer social prescribing, and sign posting to support groups and helplines that will help you to achieve better mental health and wellbeing.

You can find out more about these therapies and support in the information included below. Alternatively you can find out more through the information leaflet above, or by contacting the team directly.

If you are unsure whether the service is right for you, we are able to offer full mental health assessments and refer you on to other relevant organisations.

Accessing the service and referrals

If your GP does not currently offer referrals to our service, you can complete our referral form yourself, as we do accept self-referrals.

Please send your referral form to our secure email address: masp.wellbeing@nhs.net

We also offer a service for those based in Warrington, but to access this, please contact NHS Warrington Talking Therapies directly https://www.mhm.org.uk/talking-therapies-warrington. We are not able to accept referrals direct for those with a Warrington GP – please use the portal above.
