About Darlington Extra Care
In extra care, older people have the opportunity to have their own flat and independence whilst there are trained staff who can support people with personal care, meal preparation, medication and assistant with daily tasks. We also encourage people to get involved in hobbies and activities they are interested in and as a volunteer you will be supporting people with this.
Why should you volunteer?
- Good opportunity to give something back and use your skills to help others.
- Gain experience in a health and social care building your skills and confidence.
- Volunteering can help your wellbeing with meeting people and a sense of purpose.
What will you be doing?
- To volunteer a few hours per week running an activity group or supporting people to do an activity one to one. This could be a range of things including quizzes, crafts, games, music, exercise, baking or gardening and to support with trips out.
- To liaise with staff in getting materials and planning the activity.
- To provide a listening ear and build a rapport with people you are supporting.
What skills and experience will you need?
You don’t need qualifications for this role but having a skill or hobby you can bring to your volunteering is beneficial. You do need to be reliable, able to motivate other people, have a kind heart and willing to listen. You may need to adapt the activity as people may have different abilities. As part of the volunteer application, we do a free DBS check as you would be volunteering with adults who are more at risk.
