Bernard's story
Bernard Crowther, 68, joined Making Space as a volunteer at our Derby City Dementia Service in 2012. Here's his story so far.
"Following my retirement in 2011, I was keen to keep fit, keep my mind active, and continue to learn new skills and meet new people. Volunteering seemed like a perfect solution.
During my first two years as a volunteer at Making Space, I was involved in a variety of roles and activities, including providing carer respite, befriending and organising support groups and activities, such as the Hardy Group, that have made a real difference to many people’s lives."
Bernard supports carers through various group and one-to-one activities, and encourages participation in the local community. He has supported so many of our carers to build confidence and self-esteem, grow their social networks and have a fuller, well-balanced lifestyle.
Volunteering with Making Space has given me the opportunity to enjoy so many new experiences and meet some amazing people. The knowledge I have gained has given me a new found confidence and drive to continue to learn new things, and I am excited to begin my dementia champion training.
Bernard’s resounding compassion, sincerity and infectious personality have made him a popular and appreciated member of our team.
