New mental health crisis support service launched in Stockport
Working in partnership with Stockport CCG and Mental Health Matters, Making Space have launched a new virtual helpline service called Open Door.
Open Door offers two key elements, a 24/7 helpline for immediate mental health crisis support and a virtual service, which provides tailored support using telephone and video appointments. The service is available for anyone in the Stockport community who needs mental health support or advice fast, but that is not an emergency.
To ensure the launch of the service is a co-produced effort with the people of Stockport. We worked closely with people in the community to give the service, previously called Stockport Safe Haven Crisis Centre, a new name.
A survey was launched and from a long list of suggestions, a shortlist of three names was entered into a final vote, with Open Door securing 52% of the result.
This name suggests we are friendly, approachable and always available. An open door also symbolises ‘a way out’ or ‘a way through’, which for many people who are feeling trapped or lost is of great significance. This name also represents our ‘no wrong door approach’ and that we are a ‘doorway’ to access other support services.
Contacting the helpline can give a feeling of relief, wellbeing and peace of mind
Rachel Peacock, CEO, Making Space, said: “The new name truly represents the service, our approach and our support. With current statistics telling us that 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem each year, getting the right support in the right place, at the right time is vital.
“This is a brand new service so there isn’t a long waiting list. The service is able to provide immediate emotional support, practical advice and guidance, whilst also working with people to build on their strengths, develop coping strategies and resilience. Contacting the helpline can give a feeling of relief, wellbeing and peace of mind.”
In our current challenging times, we understand how important this crisis support and helpline is for people. You do not need to be referred to the service, and you do not need to have a formal mental health diagnosis in order to access our support.
The Open Door 24/7 helpline can be reached on 0800 138 7276 or by emailing opendoorstockport@makingspace.co.uk
