July 2023 · min read

Emily McLaren, a support worker at Rosemary Court, was one of over 150 people nominated for our Colleague Awards. She took home the trophy after judges praised her positive attitude and commitment to expanding her skills and knowledge.

She was presented with her award at a ceremony held at the Hilton Hotel in Liverpool, with a keynote speech by motivational speaker and leadership expert Gavin Ingham. The audience heard how Emily sought out distance learning in specialist areas and used her knowledge to support colleagues as well as people who use the service.

“Emily had never worked in care before and immediately threw herself into learning as much as she could,” said service manager Rebecca Liddle, who nominated her for the award.

“She’s already completed her NVQ level 2 in health and social care and is waiting to enrol on level three. She’s done numerous distance learning courses in areas including mental health and end of life care, and puts her skills into practice every day.”

Emily said of her award: “It feels absolutely amazing to have won and I feel honoured, all my hard work has paid off. I'm very proud of myself.”

Jan Felton from Training Unlimited and Laura Turgoose, customer success manager at Access, judged the Learner of the Year award and selected Emily for her passion and spark.

“She’s a shining star,” they said. “Her attitude is to be the best she can be, and she sees everyone as one big family who deserve support and recognition.”

Our Making Space Colleague Awards recognise and pay tribute to individuals and teams who inspire others, go above and beyond expectations and make a real difference to the lives of the people supported by the charity.
