Our extra care housing development in Warrington has been awarded a top grade after its first inspection by the health and social care watchdog.

Harpers Green, which provides state-of-the art independent living for people over the age of 55, was rated 'Good' by national inspectorate the CQC (Care Quality Commission).

Care and support at the multi-million pound development, launched in Nov 2020 by Torus, is provided by our charity.

Inspectors, who made two unannounced visits on 13 and 21 March 2023, were impressed with the exemplary level of care at the scheme.

The report, published in full on the CQC website, highlighted that "Care workers spoke highly about working for the service" and that "People told us staff were caring and kind and staff had a good understanding of how to support people in a way that promoted their privacy, dignity and independence."

It continued: "People we spoke with consistently felt they were safe. Comments included, 'I feel safe and very secure here" and "I feel so safe with all of them, and they always think of me. They ask me how I am and if I have any worries'."

The inspectors spoke to four people who use the service and two relatives about their experience of the care provided by Making Space. They also interviewed eight members of the care team.

According to service manager Liz Kamwithi, what sets the development apart is a strong sense of community. She said: "Over a 9 year career in social care and housing, I have never come across a scheme with such a vibrant sense of community.

"The CQC inspectors spoke to a number of tenants and their relatives and picked up the fact that the people who have chosen to live here are very happy and feel very well supported by the Making Space team. They are engaged with each other and the local community outside Harpers Green.

"This is a happy place to be!"

"Our support team is dedicated and passionate and always gives so much more than is asked of them. The sense of security, wellbeing and respect they provide shines through in the atmosphere at Harpers Green and our fantastic CQC result is a credit to them all."

Shane Parnell, regional head of operations, said: "The whole team at Harpers Green should be immensely proud of themselves.

"This is an outstanding result for a first inspection and very well deserved.

"The thriving community at Harpers Green demonstrates that with the right care and support in place, people can live independently and with a higher quality of life for longer."

Harpers Green provides 97 one and two bedroomed apartments and tailored care and support is available, assessed to individual needs. Tenants have access to the very latest facilities including spacious communal areas, landscaped gardens, a guest suite and assisted bathroom whilst the onsite hair and beauty salon, bistro and bowling green are open for the wider community to enjoy.

The scheme is generally aimed at over 55s, younger people may be considered on a case by case basis.
