A team of support workers from Calderdale have received two more trophies to add to their collection of regional and national awards.

The Carers Wellbeing Service Calderdale, which is based on Hall Street in Halifax, has been recognised with a string of accolades over the last two years. And now, the team have been rewarded again for their work in diversity, inclusion and co-production.

The new awards were bestowed by Making Space, the national health and social care charity that runs the Calderdale service. Now in their third year, the Making Space Colleague Awards are held to recognise and pay tribute to the individuals and teams amongst the charity’s 1000 nationwide employees who inspire others, go above and beyond expectations and make a real difference.

Carer support worker Natasha Malik and deputy service manager Aisha Ali received the Diversity and Inclusion Award for their strong commitment to diversity and encouraging a strong culture of respect.

Explaining the pair’s approach, Aisha said: “We wanted to highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion in our workplace for our carers, cared for and our colleagues. So winning the Diversity and Inclusion Award brings a great sense of pride and achievement for us.

“We are honoured to receive this recognition and will continue to champion inclusivity and diversity throughout our work.”

Award judge Alison Everett, the north west area manager for Skills for Care, said: “They came across as so keen and committed to making a positive impact on the lives of people they support.

“They recognise and address barriers for people accessing support and worked alongside them with respect and consideration to empower and increase their confidence. Together, Natasha and Aisha have helped colleagues to understand how other cultures are celebrated and inspired others.”

Fellow award judge Phil Orton, the chief people officer for Making Space, added: “Aisha and Natasha’s enthusiasm and passion for this role and its significant impact on the lives of carers is unmistakable.

“By championing carers and embracing differences in people, the team promotes inclusivity in a meaningful way. Undoubtedly, they are true advocates for diversity and inclusion.”

The second award was won by the whole team at Calderdale in recognition of their commitment to placing people at the centre of their own care and supporting them to achieve shared goals.

The Co-Production Award judges noted how the team constantly collaborate with carers, the people they care for, service commissioners and the Making Space fundraising team to achieve the best outcomes.

“There are lots of examples of how the Calderdale team have empowered the people they support and developed a wide range of activities that cater for different cultures, backgrounds and needs,” said award judges Tom Cruse, associate director of people at Making Space, and Mark Jenkinson, trustee.

Aisha, Natasha and manager Lydia received their awards at a ceremony held at The Edwardian hotel in Manchester. The Calderdale winners enjoyed a three-course lunch with their fellow-finalists from across the country, and a motivational interactive session from guest speaker Kat Thorne.

Phil Orton said of the awards: “I am continually inspired by the amazing work I witness throughout our services.

“We couldn’t be prouder of our winners, finalists and everyone who took the time to nominate colleagues. Each and every member of our Making Space team is an inspiration, which is why we embrace the opportunity to recognise and value their incredible work and take pride in the positive.”

The Making Space Colleague Awards and ceremony were sponsored by business from around the country. The Diversity and Inclusion Award was sponsored by Countrywide Healthcare and the Co-Production Award was sponsored by Stewart Roofing Limited.
