Rotherham dementia cafes received a cheque for £621 from the local branch of Nationwide Building Society.

Whilst Eunice Matthews and the Elliott family each donated £200 in memory of family members who used to attend the cafes.

Sue Hudspeth, team leader, Rotherham Dementia Service, received the cash on behalf of Making Space, the national adult health and social care charity that operates the cafes.

Nationwide's contribution was raised at a book sale at the Effingham Street branch as well as a donation from a member who has been affected by dementia.

The cheque presentation took place during the Big Dementia Cafe Party at the Brooklands Club, Rotherham Road, Maltby. Fifty people living with dementia and their carers attended.

The new mayor and mayoress of Rotherham, councillor Jenny Andrews and councillor Jeanette Mallinder opened the event. Both spoke about their own experiences of caring for loved ones with a dementia diagnosis.

Sue Hudspeth, team leader, Rotherham Dementia Service, said: "We are extremely greatful for this donation from Nationwide.

"Their staff and members must have worked ever so hard and dug really deep to come up with such an amazing sum of money.

"We can guarantee that every penny will be used to enhance activities, refreshments and musical entertainment at our four Rotherham dementia cafes. It will make a huge difference to the lives of people living with dementia and their carers."

Nationwide member representative Nicola Tilson, who presented the cheque along with her colleague Nicola Merry, said: "We raise money for local good causes every quarter, taking suggestions from our members.

"One member mentioned that they would like to support a dementia charity and another pointed us in the direction of the excellent Rotherham dementia cafes.

"Having now attended a cafe and seeing the amazing work the staff and volunteer team does to support people living with dementia and their carers, we are totally on board and will continue to raise funds each year."

Making Space runs free monthly dementia cafes at Maltby, Thurcroft, Wath-Upon-Dearne and Dalton. For more information call 01709910 889 or email RotherhamCaresr@makingspace.co.uk
