A team of support workers have been given an award in recognition of work they do to ensure carers in Calderdale receive essential services in their own communities.

The care team at the Carers Wellbeing Service in Calderdale - Ruth Booth, Aisha Ali, Bethany Sykes, Danielle Lewis and Elizabeth Booth - were named winners of the Community Integration award at the Making Space Colleague Awards.

They were given the trophy at a ceremony held at the Hilton Hotel in Liverpool, with a keynote speech by motivational speaker and leadership expert Gavin Ingham.

The audience heard how the team have strengthened community partnerships and created new initiatives to reach as many carers as possible across Calderdale. Judges praised them for sharing their specialisms and best practice to ensure people who care for loved ones don’t become isolated, and receive the support and advice they need.

“The team have worked very hard to establish new and better ways to identify and support unpaid carers,” said service manager Lydia Woodall, who nominated them for the award.

“One of the initiatives was to set up clinics in GP surgeries, where healthcare and social professionals can refer carers for support. We now have clinics in four surgeries and the project has massively strengthened our community links and resulted in a big increase in the number of carers we support.”

Bethany said: “We are all so honoured to win the Community Integration Award. We are in an amazing position to be able to work alongside the social prescribing team to support our unpaid carers across Calderdale. We go above and beyond for our unpaid carers and will strive to commit to even greater work going forward. Our carers are the strongest people we know, this award isn’t just for us but them as well.”

“I am so happy that our team have won this award,” said Danielle Lewis. “We all work so hard to give carers a great service and really do care and want to help everyone, so for it to be recognised is just an amazing feeling. I have been working with the team for less than a year and I feel so supported and appreciated within this amazing team.”

Aisha Ali added: “It’s such an honour winning the Community Integration Award. We are delighted to receive this recognition and grateful for the opportunity to work together with the social prescribing team to support unpaid carers. Winning this award is a reminder that small acts of kindness and support can make a huge difference in people’s lives, I couldn’t feel any prouder!”

Emily Blackburn, operations coordinator at Paragon Skills, and our Chief People Officer Phil Orton judged the Community Integration award. They selected the Calderdale team for the innovative ways they identified to find and support full-time carers.

“The team come from different backgrounds and have varying specialisms and are very skilled at supporting each other and sharing their knowledge,” they said. “They share this best practice to the benefit of the carers, and cared for, in Calderdale.”

Our Colleague Awards recognise and pay tribute to individuals and teams who inspire others, go above and beyond expectations and make a real difference to the lives of the people supported by the adult health and social care charity.

This year, over 150 people were nominated for awards, which were sponsored by telecommunications provider Focus Group.
