A team of care workers have been given an award in recognition of their commitment to working with care home residents to improve services and raise standards.

The team at Kingshill were named winners of the Co-Production award at our Making Space Colleague Awards. They were given the trophy at a ceremony held at the Hilton Hotel in Liverpool, with a keynote speech by motivational speaker and leadership expert Gavin Ingham.

The audience heard how their approach to working with residents was weaved through everything from staff recruitment to meal planning. Judges praised their “significant enthusiasm and commitment” and the comprehensive programme of co-production activities.

“The team work with residents to increase their independence and actively encourage them into supported employment and volunteering,” said Making Space co-production co-ordinator Mark Thornton, who nominated them for the award.

“Everything is arranged together, including trips, arts and crafts, parties, groups, fundraising and even recruitment. The team have demonstrated their commitment to working in partnership with residents consistently over the last few years and have developed their own materials to make sure residents stay actively involved.”

Colette O’Neil is the registered service manager at Kingshill. She said of her team’s success: “I felt extremely proud of the team and service users at Kingshill, everyone works so hard to ensure we are delivering a quality service. We strive to ensure that the service users are at the forefront of everything so it was amazing to receive recognition for this. This award is a massive achievement for the everyone at Kingshill.”

Making Space trustee Elaine Johnston and chief of operations Nick Farmer judged the Co-Production award. They selected the Kingshill team for their “flexibility in responding to the views and choices of residents at short notice.”

“There’s strong evidence of involving clients and their families in how the service runs and how their comments and complaints are handled in an open manner,” they added.

The Making Space Colleague Awards recognise and pay tribute to individuals and teams who inspire others, go above and beyond expectations and make a real difference to the lives of the people supported by the adult health and social care charity.

This year, over 150 people were nominated for awards, which were sponsored by telecommunications provider Focus Group.
