A support worker is in the running for a national care award in recognition of his work with supported housing tenants at Waterhouse Court in Leeds.

Naveed Mughal has been shortlisted in the Care and Support Worker category of the Housing With Care Awards. The national awards are being held for the first time this year to recognise and celebrate excellence in supported and extra care housing.

The Care and Support Worker award recognises the significant role they play in consistently providing a high standard of care. Evidence of dedication, awareness of colleagues and career development through training will be important elements for the judges in deciding who takes home the trophy.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony at the London Marriott Hotel on Grosvenor Square on 9 June.

“I cannot express how chuffed I am to be shortlisted,” says Naveed. “To be recognised for the hard-work, commitment and displaying a positive impact to the service I support is amazing and totally unexpected.”

Naveed joined the supported housing team at Waterhouse Court in June 2022.

Service manager Sajeed Daji, who nominated Naveed for the award, says he made an instant impact. “He immediately began to identify individual needs of tenants and ensure they were met respectfully and in a timely manner,” he explains.

“He’s helped people with personal grooming and shopping, helped older tenants with online access, set up social media groups to keep people connected and arranged alternative Christmas meals to help people at our scheme embrace food from different cultures.

“He’s very flexible and always happy to cover other schemes at short notice with a smile and a helping hand.”

Jenny MacLeod Regional Head of Operations, says: “Naveed quickly made a positive impact at the scheme with his friendly manners and easy-going outlook. He’s making valuable contributions to service delivery and coproduction interventions that result in positive outcomes.

“He’s a newcomer to the care sector, but is embracing education and his own development while making a difference to the lives of others. I believe that Naveed already deserves to be recognised as one of the best. I am sure he has a lot more to give and am excited to see his care career take off.”
