Sandalwood Day Centre supports older people living with dementia and other health related concerns. This helps give families some respite, supports people to do meaningful activities, have a balance of healthy meal and encourages people to have fun and improve their quality of life.
Why should you volunteer?
This is a good opportunity to give something back whilst gaining health and social care experience, to be part of a friendly team and do something rewarding. You will be supporting people to have fun, use their skills, keep active and stay well.
What will I be doing?
- Encourage and support people to get involved in an activity they enjoy. Staff know people who come to the centre well and can support you with doing activities that suit people's interests and that they enjoy.
- To run an activity that you enjoy and is appropriate for people who come to the centre. For example this could be playing music, dancing, arts and crafts, games or gardening.
- To work with staff with refreshments and ensure people keep hydrated e.g. making tea and coffee and reminding people to drink. People living with dementia can forget to eat and drink, which can affect their health and wellbeing.
Who are we looking for?
Some experience supporting people living with dementia is useful but not essential. You need to be patient, willing to try things, can work as part of a team and are a people person.
During your application, a DBS (Disclosure Barring Check) may be done depending on your volunteer role. Your volunteer contact will support you with this and a positive disclosure doesn’t necessarily disqualify you from volunteering with is. The DBS is free of charge and will involve filling out an online form and bringing proof of ID.
