About Café Connect

Our newly refurbished Café Connect is a space for local people to socialise, connect and to have a low cost meal. There will be volunteers and staff ready to support people with their mental health, whether that is connecting and signposting people to other services or having a chat with people.

Why should you volunteer?

Food and socialising have always gone hand in hand. But for people who live alone, without relatives or a support network nearby, mealtimes can be a lonely time of day. This is a good opportunity for you to help others feel less isolated whilst also gaining experience, giving something back and meeting people.

What will you be doing?

  • Taking orders and giving a friendly welcome to diners
  • Chatting with people, especially if they are on their own and appear to be struggling
  • Give people a directory of services and help them find the services that are right for them
  • Flag anyone who is in crisis to support workers to get more support

What skills and experience will you need?

Ideally, we would like you to have some knowledge of mental health illness but not essential. We are looking for people that are reliable, friendly, caring, and have a friendly manner. You will need to learn about what services are available in the local area and be comfortable communicating with people from various backgrounds.

During your application, a DBS (Disclosure Barring Check) may be done depending on your volunteer role. Your volunteer contact will support you with this and a positive disclosure doesn’t necessarily disqualify you from volunteering with is. The DBS is free of charge and will involve filling out an online form and bringing proof of ID.
