Group Helper for Men's Peer Support Group

Warrington Day Service is a space for people living with mental health diagnosis to socialise and to get involved in meaningful activities to help build confidence and skills to support people to achieve their goals.

On average, around 15 to 20 people go to the centre on Allen Street regularly. They get involved in various activities such as cooking groups, health and wellbeing, music, quizzes and peer support groups. The men’s peer support group has been a huge success with 8 – 15 people coming regularly and Tony who volunteers running the group would benefit from another volunteer to support him.

This is a good opportunity to meet people and volunteer as part of a friendly team. Volunteering can give you a sense of purpose and achievement as well as building experience.

What will I be doing?

• To volunteer at the service at the group and on trips out
• Spend time with people, to build a rapport and to provide emotional support
• Encourage people to get involved and have meaningful conversations
• To carry out role in accordance with organisation health and safety policy

Who are we looking for?

Some knowledge and experience of mental illness is useful for this opportunity. We are looking for people who are reliable, friendly, caring, have good communication skills and are good at motivating and gently encouraging other people. As this role is for a men’s peer support group, a male volunteer would be better for this opportunity.

During your application, a DBS (Disclosure Barring Check) may be done depending on your volunteer role. Your volunteer contact will support you with this and a positive disclosure doesn’t necessarily disqualify you from volunteering with is. The DBS is free of charge and will involve filling out an online form and bringing proof of ID.
