About Silver Street Respite Service

Making Space is a values-led charity with the vision for wellbeing to be at the heart of health and social care. Silver Street Respite Service supports people living with learning disabilities to have a short break whilst getting the support they need. Families can also get respite knowing that their loved ones are being well supported in an environment that meets their needs. We have a minibus for people to attend appointments, activities and to go on trips. However, we don’t always have a driver for the minibus especially of an evening or weekend.

Why should you volunteer?

This is a fun and rewarding role where you have the option of getting involved in activities that people are doing or to do your own thing after dropping people off in the minibus. You will be supporting people to go on trips, have fun and to do activities that are beneficial for their wellbeing. Activities would include going to the seaside, visiting farms, going to Christmas markets and going to accessible parks.

What will you be doing?

  • Driving people to and from activities from Silver Street Respite Service
  • Working with staff to support people with their journey, embarking and disembarking the minibus
  • Building a rapport with staff and people we support during the trip
  • Following Making Space policy and procedures

What skills and experience will you need?

You need a full driving licence including a D1 entitlement or full D1 licence to drive a minibus. Some knowledge of learning disabilities is useful but not essential as there will be staff going on trips with people we support. We are looking for volunteers who are reliable and sociable.
